In 1949 Mr. Kihachiro Onitsuka founded ‘Onitsuka Co. Ltd.’ the forerunner to the ASICS brand. Onitsuka’s first shoes were designed to meet the needs of Japan’s rising basketball stars and featured a sole designed to mimic the action of an octopus suction cup. 1950 saw the company change to the ‘Onitsuka Tiger’ name we know today and in this year celebrated there first major sporting success when the winner of the Boston Marathon wore Onitsuka Tiger shoes. The ASICS corporation was born in 1977, the name being an acronym of the latin phrase 'anima sana in corpore sano’ or A Sound Mind In A Sound Body’, a name chosen to promote the idea that sport is the best way to keep a happy and healthy lifestyle.
