Pulsebeat SPZL - a collaboration between adidas Spezial and Peter Saville.
Since Joy Division’s Unknown Pleasures release in 1979 the album cover artwork has become a modern icon.
43 years later the designer of the sleeve, Peter Saville, has infused that visual with new meaning by reinterpreting biometric data from the men’s and women’s teams of Manchester United Football Club in order to redraw the artwork’s signature waveforms - described by Peter as a 'living artwork' which he has named ‘Pulsebeat’.
The Pulsebeat SPZL is a tweaked update of the adidas Blackburn SPZL (a modern shoe that takes inspiration from the adidas City Series) in a premium deep black suede upper with reflective lateral three stripes, alternate flocked three stripes on the medial side, a reflective heel counter, and a black outsole.
The original Unknown Pleasures album cover has the waveforms sat in the centre of a black sleeve - it gives the impression that they are sitting in a vacuum, and as a nod to the use of black space and scale on the original album sleeve Peter Saville's Pulsebeat artwork has been inset onto the shoe’s tongue using the shoe's all black colourway as a backdrop.
The shoes come with an alternate version of Peter's artwork on the leather swing tag and are packaged in a bespoke Pulsebeat box with a graphic tissue wrap and additional footbeds that carry the Pulsebeat artwork.
Peter was consulted and gave design approvals at every stage of the process.
